AB HEUTE ist ein authentischer und tiefgehender Einblick in den teilweise jahrelangen rechtlichen Hürdenlauf, den trans Personen in Deutschland durchlaufen müssen, um offiziell ihren richtigen Namen- und Personenstand führen zu dürfen. Zum ersten Mal sprechen 20 trans Personen über das sog. Transsexuellengesetz –
ein Gesetz, das bei seiner Einführung 1981 als eines der humansten Gesetze galt. Rückblickend hätte diese Annahme abwegiger kaum sein können. Für eine Namens- und Personenstandsänderung forderte das Transsexuellengesetz von trans Menschen sich scheiden, sterilisieren und begutachten zu lassen. Bereits mehrfach hat das Bundesverfassungsgericht Teile als verfassungswidrig erklärt. Dennoch sind bisher alle Versuche einer Abschaffung gescheitert und eine diskriminierende Fremdbegutachtung ist auch heute noch eine Voraussetzung für eine Namens- und Personenstandsänderung.
Als zweiköpfiges und queeres Produktionsteam haben Sophia Emmerich und Sam Arndt eine ehrliche und bewegende Momentaufnahme dessen eingefangen, was es bedeutet, in Deutschland trans zu sein. Nie zuvor gab es eine diversere Auseinandersetzung mit dem Transsexuellengesetz und der anhaltenden rechtlichen Diskriminierung der trans Community.
AB HEUTE is an authentic, intimate documentary giving voice to the discriminatory legal process of official name change experienced by transgender people in Germany. By sharing such a moving compilation of stories from the transgender community, the film
lays bare the honest and varied experiences of navigating a legal system that seeks to invalidate transgender lives. In unprecedented interviews and access to the community, twenty different transgender individuals, people from all walks of life, discuss the Transsexuellengesetz – a law directed towards the transgender community that was widely considered to be the most groundbreaking and humane piece of legislation of its time. With the benefit of hindsight, we know now that the assumption could not have been more wrong. The Transsexuellengesetz was a violation of rights and bodily autonomy – it forced transgender people to get
divorced, sterilized and undergo psychological assessment. Since its 1981 implementation, most of the law has been declared unconstitutional by the German Federal Constitutional
Court. However, the degrading psychological assessment is still a requirement today for transgender individuals seeking to change their names and gender on legal documentation. All attempts to abolish this law have failed and led to controversial discussions within the queer community. Sharing their most vulnerable moments, the interviews in AB HEUTE show the importance of legal recognition and humane treatment, as well as depicting the chilling
extent of the discrimination transgender people still face on a daily basis. As an entirely queer and trans production team, Sophia Emmerich and Sam Arndt captured a wonderfully honest and moving portrait of what it means to be a transgender person in Germany. Never before has there been a more diverse compilation of transgender voices expressing their views on the topic of the Transsexuellengesetz and the persistent legal discrimination of the transgender community.
